Could the KCRep move to the Plaza?

June 23, 2026

A historic Plaza landmark may once again become a home for the performing arts.

According to recent reports, Kansas City Repertory Theatre (KCRep) has been exploring the possibility of relocating to the former Plaza Theater Building at 47th and Wyandotte. While discussions remain preliminary and neither KCRep nor Plaza owner Gillon Property Group has announced formal plans, the concept would bring one of Kansas City's premier theater organizations into a building with deep roots in the city's cultural history.

The Plaza Theater Building first opened in 1928 as one of the region's prime entertainment destinations. Designed by architect Edward Tanner, the building featured an ornate tower and Spanish-inspired architecture that complemented the emerging Country Club Plaza. For decades, the theater hosted films and live performances, earning a reputation as the "show place of Mid-America." A major renovation in 1961 adapted the venue to accommodate performances by the Kansas City Philharmonic, further cementing its role as a cultural gathering place.

The theater ultimately closed in 1999 and was converted to retail use, a role it continues to serve today. However, the building's history as a performance venue has remained an important part of its legacy. A future KCRep theater would represent a return to that original purpose while introducing a new cultural anchor to the Plaza district.

KCRep has called UMKC's Spencer Theatre home since 1979 but announced in 2024 that their affiliation agreement will end in 2029, marking the start of new growth for both institutions as they expand and pursue new opportunities. This prompted a search for a long-term home that can support future growth and programming needs. KCRep will continue performing its annual production of "A Christmas Carol" at Spencer Theatre even after its current agreement expires.

If realized, a Plaza location would add another performing arts destination to a district already known for its concentration of cultural institutions, museums, public art, and creative activity. It would also coincide with other major arts investments being discussed nearby, including the Kansas City Symphony's proposed concert venue near 49th and Main.

While many details remain unknown, the possibility of bringing live theater back to one of the Plaza's most historic buildings has generated interest across the community. The Plaza District Council will continue to follow developments and share updates as more information becomes available.
