City Plan Commission Recommends Approval of Proposed South Plaza Symphony Venue

June 22, 2026

The proposed Kansas City Symphony venue in South Plaza reached an important milestone this month, receiving a recommendation for approval from the City Plan Commission. The project will now move forward to City Council for additional review and consideration.

First announced in March, the venue is planned for 4901 Main Street and is designed to accommodate approximately 4,600 guests. The facility would serve as a new home for touring artists, special events, and other performances while allowing the Kansas City Symphony to continue presenting its traditional orchestral programming at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts.

Parking and transportation were a significant part of the discussion during the review process. Symphony representatives noted that the venue's location provides access to the KC Streetcar and existing parking resources throughout the surrounding area. Project leaders have indicated that approximately 1,400 parking spaces are available within a few blocks of the site and that parking is expected to be incorporated into the ticket price to help manage visitor access and neighborhood impacts.

According to project plans, the venue is expected to host more than 100 events annually and attract an estimated 300,000 visitors each year. Symphony leadership has emphasized the project's potential to expand Kansas City's live entertainment offerings while strengthening the organization's long-term sustainability.

"While the increased crowds and activity generated by a venue of this scale will present challenges, they also create a significant economic and placemaking opportunity. If the project is designed to connect with and strengthen the surrounding corridor, rather than operate as an isolated event facility, it can support local businesses, activate public spaces, and contribute to the long-term vitality of South Plaza and the Plaza District as a whole." -Kate Marshall, President and CEO of the Plaza District Council

The Plaza District Council will continue to monitor the project's progress and share updates as it advances through the city's review process.
