Water Main Replacement Underway in the Plaza District
June 12, 2025
KC Water has begun work on a major infrastructure upgrade in the Plaza District, focusing on the area between West 46th and 50th Streets, from Liberty to Main. This $2.08 million project is part of the city’s ongoing efforts to modernize its aging water system and ensure safe, reliable service for years to come.

What’s Happening?
Construction crews are replacing underground water mains that have aged past their useful life. The work involves excavating sections of the street, replacing old pipes, and restoring the surrounding areas. This project is one of many taking place across Kansas City as part of a larger plan to replace roughly 1 percent of the city’s water mains each year.
What to Expect
Residents and businesses in the area may notice increased activity, including construction equipment, road closures, and occasional service interruptions. KC Water is committed to minimizing disruptions by providing advance notice for any planned water shut-offs and maintaining clear access wherever possible. After the work is complete, all impacted curbs, sidewalks, and landscaping will be fully restored.
Why It Matters
Much of Kansas City’s water infrastructure is over a century old. Replacing outdated mains not only helps prevent breaks and water loss but also improves pressure and service reliability. This project is part of a larger $77.5 million capital improvement plan for fiscal year 2025, which supports long-term public health, safety, and infrastructure resilience.
