UMKC Announces Conservatory Expansion
January 12, 2022
The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) has unveiled an ambitious expansion plan, marking a significant milestone in its commitment to the performing arts. Announced during the 2025 Crescendo in Concert, the initiative aims to raise $35 million for a 35,000-square-foot addition to the Olson Performing Arts Center. This expansion will introduce state-of-the-art performance and rehearsal spaces, including a large ensemble hall, two dance studios, and a versatile black box theater, enhancing opportunities for students and the Kansas City arts community.
UMKC Chancellor Mauli Agrawal emphasized that the expansion is more than just a physical growth; it’s about enriching the educational environment and strengthening community ties. The project has already secured significant support, with the Muriel McBrien Kauffman Family Foundation leading the way, contributing to the $35 million goal for the first phase. This development is expected to increase enrollment by up to 40%, particularly benefiting the dance and theatre programs, and will support the newly introduced minor in integrated performing arts.
This development marks a new chapter for the Conservatory, reinforcing UMKC’s commitment to fostering creativity, community engagement, and academic excellence in the performing arts.
