The International Dragon Boat Festival Returns to Brush Creek
June 13, 2025
Kansas City’s cultural calendar is packed with exciting events, including the upcoming International Dragon Boat Festival— Saturday, June 21st, at Brush Creek along the Country Club Plaza. Hosted by KC Parks, in partnership with the Society for Friendship with China and the Kansas City–Xi’an Sister City Committee, this unique celebration brings the centuries-old tradition of dragon boat racing to the heart of our city. From 10 AM to 3 PM, the banks of Brush Creek will come alive with the rhythmic beat of drums, the flash of paddles, and the sounds and sights of Chinese culture.
What You’ll Experience
Whether you’re a long-time attendee or new to the festival, there’s something for everyone to enjoy:
Dragon Boat Races: Cheer on teams as they race sleek, colorfully painted boats adorned with dragon heads and tails. The energy is electric as paddlers move in unison to the steady rhythm of the drummer.
Cultural Performances: Enjoy traditional Chinese lion dances, martial arts demonstrations, music, and drumming performances throughout the day.
Interactive Activities: Bring the whole family! Kids (and adults) can enjoy arts and crafts, storytelling, and more.
Local Vendors & Food Trucks: Sample delicious eats and shop from local artisans and organizations sharing their love of culture and community.
Why It Matters
The Dragon Boat Festival, or Duanwu Jie (端午节), has been celebrated in China for more than 2,000 years. By bringing it to Kansas City, the event fosters cross-cultural understanding, honors our city’s Sister City relationship with Xi’an, and reminds us of the power of community collaboration. This free, family-friendly event is more than a spectacle—it’s a chance to connect, celebrate, and be inspired by the diversity that makes Kansas City such a vibrant place to live.
