Streetcar Expansion Set to Open in Fall 2025
May 1, 2025
Kansas City’s ambitious streetcar expansion is nearing completion, with the Main Street Extension set to open to the public in fall 2025. This 3.5-mile addition stretches from Union Station to the University of Missouri–Kansas City (UMKC), introducing 16 new stops and significantly enhancing connectivity across the city. The Main Street Extension includes the installation of over 36,000 feet of track and the addition of 16 new stops, connecting key neighborhoods and institutions such as The Plaza District, Midtown, Westport, the Art Museum District, and UMKC.
Preparing for Launch
With track installation completed in late 2024, the focus has shifted to rigorous testing and safety certifications. The Kansas City Streetcar Authority has expanded its fleet, receiving eight new vehicles to accommodate the extended route . Each streetcar undergoes a comprehensive testing and commissioning process before being certified for public service. The federal safety certification process is anticipated to take approximately six months, with the extension expected to open in fall 2025.
Looking Ahead
Beyond the Main Street Extension, Kansas City is advancing the Riverfront Extension, a 0.7-mile addition connecting the Downtown starter line to the Berkley Riverfront. Construction began in March 2025, with the goal of opening before the 2026 World Cup . These developments signify Kansas City’s commitment to enhancing public transit and fostering sustainable urban growth. As the city prepares for the streetcar’s expanded service, residents and visitors can anticipate improved mobility and a more connected community.
